One Year After Heart Attack, Rabbi and Friends to Bike 600 Miles Sharing Message of ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Soul’

While attending a Bar Mitzvah celebration on June 7, 2017, then 36-year-old Rabbi Nochum Kurinsky of Ponte Vedra Beach suddenly felt chest pains. Heading straight to the hospital, he could not help but think about his synagogue's annual dinner just four days away, let alone the countless other activities he regularly involved himself in.

Father of six and co-director of Chabad at the Beaches together with his wife Leah, the Rabbi has spent the last 15 years selflessly serving his community. Now, he was the one in need of help. A doctor informed Rabbi Kurinsky he was having an active heart attack and must be brought to the operating room for emergency surgery.

Stepping out of the hospital a few days later, Rabbi Kurinsky was advised to improve his health and incorporate a daily exercise regimen. Soon after, he started cycling.

One year after that terrifying heart attack, Rabbi Nochum Kurinsky is taking his show on the road and embarking on a 600 mile journey down Florida’s east coast promoting not only physical health, but spiritual health as well. Joined by members of his synagogue and some friends from the community, the Rabbi originally set this goal as more of a motivator than anything else. He never expected to actually do it. Now that dream is a reality thanks to the help and support of his caring community.

“We're starting at our synagogue, the northeasternmost one in the state of Florida, and biking down Florida’s Atlantic coast all the way to the state’s southernmost synagogue in Key West,” says Rabbi Nochum Kurinsky. “While one might see physical health and spiritual health as unconnected, physical health assists one’s body to be a vessel to serve G-d and be a source of goodness to others”

Along the journey, the Rabbi and his partners will be sharing the message of ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Soul’ by visiting several Jewish communities along the way and sharing their inspiring message with everyone they encounter.

The Trip

Your body and soul will fly while we cross the great state of Florida by bike. This bike ride travels through almost all of the beachside towns and cities in Florida.

The intention of the ride is to inspire both the young and the old on the importance of exercising and how a healthy body is a vessel for soul expression.

There are some fantastic green spaces in towns and cities across Florida. Many of our routes feature sections away from traffic through public parks, that often have path circuits long enough for a decent ride.

Whether you're escaping the concrete jungle for a few hours, or days, here in Florida, we are blessed with thousands of miles of traffic-free waterways, providing a perfect environment for novice riders, families and seasoned cyclists alike.

What's more, the largely flat routes are tailor-made for people who can ride over 100 miles per day while they enjoy a gentle meander in the sunshine.
